Inspiring Action for Conservation

This is the 4th year of the Connemara Green Festival and each year it continues to grow and expand. The main aim of the festival is to raise awareness of the unique ecology of Connemara and raise funds for biodiversity projects and conservation of our local environment.

This year’s theme is ‘Eating for Conservation’. This year our biodiversity project is to raise funds for awareness and conservation of the Freshwater Pearl Mussel, which is the rarest invertebrate in Europe with sustainable populations only existing now in Ireland and Scotland. This mussel is found in the local Dawros river and is under huge threat. The river was a pristine angling river for trout and salmon but has declined in recent years. It is home to Wild Atlantic salmon and is a critical part of the fragile eco system of the river.

The festival will take place from Friday the 12th to Sunday the 14th of October 2018 and is based in Letterfrack village, Connemara, at the foot of Diamond Hill and the Connemara National Park and along the Wild Atlantic Way. The weekend includes walks with local ecologists and historians, nature workshops, foraging on the seashore, an oyster farm tour & tasting hill walks, learning about local fauna and flora, outdoor activities, vegetarian cooking demonstrations, pond dipping in the Connemara National Park, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and boat trips in Letterfrack Bay. All ages are welcome!

The festival is a flagship event for the Galway & West of Ireland, European Region of Gastronomy 2018 and many of the events will have a ‘foodie flavour’, highlighting the wide variety of local artisan food producers in the region.

The official opening of the festival will take place at 6m on Friday 12 October and is followed by a ‘taste of the forest’ which celebrate the new stages of the Waterfall – Atlantic Link Walk in Letterfrack.

One of the highlights for the festival will be the Connemara Green Feast on the 13th of October at 6pm and will be a sample tasting menu showcasing our local food produce and foraging. It will start in the Connemara National Park. Places are limited so make sure to book on the website All proceeds go to actions for conservation.

Most of the activities over the weekend are free of charge and some require booking. Please check the website for more details. The Connemara festival ends on Sunday with a Farm to Fork-Walk, talk & tasting at Rosleague Manor.
