Connemara Walking Festival, West of Ireland, 3 – 6 May 2019
Enjoy the unique combination of Connemara’s mountains and Atlantic coastline along the invigorating Wild Atlantic Way. This exhilarating walking festival takes place in Leenane, which is situated on the edge of Killary Harbour, on Ireland’s only fjord and is surrounded by majestic mountains in all directions. This May will be the 11th year of the Connemara Mountain Walking Festival (formally the Leenane Mountain Walking Festival) which has become a major walking event on the calendar for Connemara and the region. The 2019 event will take place over the May bank holiday weekend.
Come meet the local farmers who are involved with guiding the various walks and share their vast knowledge, folklore and history of the land. As well as our traditional warm welcome of complimentary tea & scones at the end of each walking day by all our local businesses.
This great festival has been designed to suit all levels of walkers from casual low level walks to the more experienced! Each day there is a choice of at least 3 walks from strenuous to low level. This year the programme includes: Derryclare, Ben Gorm, Maumean, Mweelrea Loop, Glenawough and the Killary Famine Trail.
Each walk is guided by qualified, experienced guides and covered by public insurance.
With the farmers involvement in the event, they kindly grant the participants permission to cross their lands and visit areas that are not normally open to the public. Transport to and from starting and finishing points will be provided as well as tea/coffee & scones at various local businesses at the end of each day. There is also entertainment each evening including a Céili on the Sunday!
Any surplus profits from the event are re circulated back into the Leenane Development Association.
