The walking grades detailed below, are not official statements but have been created for guidance purposes to give website users an idea of what to expect on a walk detailed within this website.


Easy

Easy

Walks and treks of less than 8 kilometers (5 miles), usually suitable for most abilities. Surface may be loose, uneven and muddy. Sensible footwear required. Suitable for most people in good health.

Moderate

Walks and treks over 8 kilometers (5 miles), usually suitable for those with a good standard of fitness. Surface likely to be more challenging, loose, uneven and muddy. Stout waterproof footwear with ankle support required. A good standard of fitness will make the walk more enjoyable.

Difficult

Difficult

Walks, hikes and treks: of any length, involving prolonged and usually strenuous physical activity. Requiring a high level of fitness and stamina or extended periods living in the great outdoors with possible exposure to bad weather. Surfaces may be challenging, loose, boggy, steep, rocky and muddy. Hill walking boots required. In winter, additional equipment and the ability to use it will be necessary. Hiking, trekking, rock climbing and mountaineering are dangerous activities with risk of personal injury or death. Participants in these safaris should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions and involvement. Higher level of fitness and stamina required.

Severe

Walks, hikes or treks of more than 50 kilometers (31 miles), usually taking more than one day and requiring a high level of fitness and stamina. Usually on erratically marked and mixed surfaces which will be more challenging: loose, boggy, steep, rocky, slippery and muddy.

Suitable for very active people used to prolonged effort.


Extreme

Extreme

Walks, hikes or treks which will involve elements of rock climbing and/or mountaineering with a high degree of exposure to the elements in more remote countryside with difficult access.

Suitable for very active people used to prolonged effort combined with high level of technical skills and expertise.
